 Final League Tables & Results

The 2008/2009 archive. This archive contains league tables for all adult, male, open-aged, Saturday, 11-a-side leagues in England during the 2008/09 season. In the vast majority of cases, these are final tables; however in a small number of cases, it has not been possible to determine the final table, and the latest available table has been used. Results are currently been added by Brian & Stephen Cox.

Information contained. The archive is restricted purely to final tables, and in no ways claims to be a definitive record of all football played in England in the 2008/09 season, even within the limited parameters set. In many cases, more in-depth information (e.g. results and grids, league cups, etc) is available elsewhere, either in publications or on the internet. However its aim is to provide at least the same minimal level of information for all leagues, without regard to status.

Club names. Wherever possible, official club names (as registered with the Football Association) are used throughout, as opposed to the informal names by which the clubs are sometimes referred to by the leagues in which they compete. This is particularly relevant where a club may have teams competing in more than one league.

Team names. Teams which are not a club’s first team are indicated throughout in italics. For consistency, a convention has been adopted whereby a club’s second team are referred to as their reserves, the third team as the ‘A’ team, and so on. This may occasionally differ from the way the clubs themselves or their leagues refer to the teams. For example, a club’s third team may be variously referred to as the ‘A’ team, the ‘3rds’, ‘III’ or the ‘C’ team, amongst others. In this archive, the former nomenclature is nearly always used. In some cases, the alternative name has been retained. This is generally where it is known that an age-limited team (for example, veterans, youth, under-21) competed in an open-aged league. In a very few cases, the generally used nomenclature has been retained, for the sake of clarity. For example, despite being the reserve team of Ashington, Ashington Colliers are referred to by that name, not as “Ashington reserves”. However, they are still marked in  italics.

Withdrawals. In as far as it is known, teams which withdrew either in-season or pre-season but after the constitution of the division had been established have been included in the league tables, marked as “withdrew”. Where it has been recorded, the month in which they withdrew has also been indicated. Individual leagues treat withdrawals, especially late season withdrawals, in different ways – the record of withdrawn teams (and the record of matches against them) may be expunged or unplayed games may be marked as losses for them and wins for their opponents, with or without adjustments to the respective goals for/against tallies. In these cases, the conventions used by the various leagues concerned have been silently adopted.

Source of the archive. The information in this archive is principally based on a document posted to the www.nlpl.co.uk forum in June 2009. The main differences between this archive and that document are:

 A reorganisation of leagues into alphabetic order

-          For clarity, the removal of the list of clubs’ first teams competing in a particular division

-          A number of corrections

Acknowledgements. The information within this archive was mainly collated and collected by André Rettelet. Some of his errors were corrected as a result of his original posting. Many remain, for which he is solely responsible. The main contributors to this archive are however everyone who dedicated so much of their time into providing the information which resulted in the source material (and often, so much more) being made available.
